A visitor to this area these days wouldn’t realize that ranchers once raised a lot of sheep here. When the patriarch of the family, John H. Harvat, passed, his obituary stated that he began his enterprise with 1800 sheep, building his herd until he owned 25,000 sheep and 20,000 acres of land.
